Shoal Creek - North Georgia Bluegrass For Any Occasion

Meet The Band

Shoal Creek

The Shoal Creek Band was formed in 1985 and has become one of North Georgia's most popular bluegrass music groups.

Shoal Creek's versatile repertoire ranges from the traditional styles of Flatt & Scruggs and Bill Monroe and the mountain style of the Stanley brothers to the more progressive styles exemplified by the Seldom Scene and Alison Krauss. Their primary goal for each performance is to keep the audience entertained, so that in addition to singing and playing solid, tight and tasteful selections, they relate to their listeners and have fun together. They enjoy what they do and it shows!

The Band performs primarily at concerts, private gatherings and festivals in North Georgia and the Southeast. A few gospel songs are usually included on the program and the band does several all gospel performances each year.

Jim Bennett - Guitar & Vocals
In addition to his singing versatility and solid guitar work, Jim handles most of the talking for the performances and is adept at keeping the show moving and getting the audience involved. He is a North Georgia native, a lifelong musician and entertainer, and an original member of the Shoal Creek Band.

Steve Welsch - Fiddle & Vocals
A versatile and talented fiddler, Steve is adept at hard driving bluegrass, slow waltzes, Irish music and old-time fiddle tunes. His bass vocals round out the band's four part harmony singing. Steve is another lifelong musician who has played with many groups, including the Southern Crescent Band of Athens, Georgia.

Lee Hiers - Dobro & Vocals
Lee has been involved in bluegrass music for over 25 years, and in addition to playing with several groups including Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike and Dixieliner, has made guest appearances with many bands in the Southeast. Originally a guitarist, Lee made the switch to dobro because of the additional textures it adds to the bluegrass sound.

Scooter Dryden - Banjo & Vocals
Scoot has moved from bass to banjo which is his main instrument. A versatile picker who plays a hybrid of Scrugss/Crowe/Reno style banjo that is all his own. You may have seen him play banjo with Kindlin' or Dixieliner.

Chris Williamson - Bass
Chris is the newest member of Shoal Creek, replacing Scooter on bass when he moved over to banjo. We're having a fine time picking with Chris and he's doing an excellent job holding everything together. Chris is also currently touring as a member of Randy Kohrs' band The Lites.
